Frederick Douglass tried two times before he escaped from slavery the thrid time he got help from Anna Murray. (Someone he fell in love with, and a black free women). September 3, 1838. Frederick got on a train to Havre de Grace, Maryland. There he got assisted by Murray, she gave him a sailor's outfit, and some of her savings, he also got identification papers from a free black seaman. Then Douglass starts to make his journey to the safe house of David Ruggles in NY. In less than 24 hours Douglass gets to NY, and meets Murray. They get married, on September 15, 1838, 12 days after he gets to NY. Then they adopted the married name Johnson to hide Douglass identity. They later settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, which had a free black community, there they adopted the married name Douglass.
